In an article appearing in Northeastern University’s digital magazine “Experience,” author Ethan Gilsdorf notes, “In recent years, dozens of colleges have amped up their Esports programs, going so far as to recruit players, hand out Esports scholarships, and build multimillion-dollar Esports facilities. It’s not hard to imagine a time in the near future when some Overwatch Championship will rival the Rose Bowl or March Madness.”
The article, titled “Forget football. Video games are the next big college sport,” makes several mentions of Alfred State College, which launched its own Esports team in the spring of 2019.
