Small class sizes that allow for more individualized attention also played a role in Deborah’s decision to become a Pioneer.
A number of reasons sparked Deborah Huppman’s decision to enroll at Alfred State.
One of these was being able to get plenty of applied learning experiences in her program.
“I liked that we were able to get a lot of hands-on training and that you weren’t sitting in a lecture all day.”
Another reason was the professors, whom she found to be very helpful and also very knowledgeable about their field.
“They have a lot of job experience. They didn’t just sit in a classroom and learn out of a textbook, either. They actually learned from years and years of experience, so that’s really cool.”

“The class size was only 20 students, so I wasn’t going to be sitting in a room where there are 100 students to a teacher. Here, there are only 20 students to a teacher and I liked that.”
While she didn’t know much about welding prior to enrolling at Alfred State, Deborah definitely feels well prepared for the workforce now because of the professors and the hands-on training she has received.
“I was really excited to learn more and now I have more confidence in myself and my own knowledge of welding.”
