Five Alfred State outdoor track & field athletes have raced to NJCAA Division III All-Americans while six athletes earned All-Region honors. The Pioneer men's team finished 9th in the nation and 4th in Region III while the women were tied for 10th in the nation and 4th in Region III.
Carey Crooker (Addison), Bridget McMahon (Avoca), Kelsey Wissert (Scio), and Pamela Breedlove (Rochester/East) raced to 1st team All-American honors by winning the 4 x 800 relay. The won the title by nearly seven seconds in a time of 10:17.56. At regionals, Crooker, McMahon, and Wissert teamed with Yakima Williams (Brooklyn/Franklin Lane) to win in 10:27.60 and earn 1st team All-Region honors.
Crooker also earned 2nd team All-American honors with a 2nd place finish in the 800 m. She ran a 2:30.21 at nationals. At regionals, she earned 1st team All-Region honors by winning the 800 in 2:24.73.
On the men's side, John Sweeney (Barker) earned 2nd team All-American honors in the 10,000 and 1st team All-Region in the 5,000. At nationals, he ran a 34:09.89 to finish just over 30 seconds behind the national champion. In winning the 5,000 at regionals, Sweeney came from behind to win in 16:22.99.
Eddie Sparks (Horseheads) also earned All-Region honors by winning the pole vault. He recorded a leap of 4.14 m to win the regional title.
Alfred State will be the proud host of the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships the next two years at Pioneer Stadium.
