At a glance

“I chose Alfred State after looking at a bunch of different architecture schools around the area and what really drew me here was their technical background and their value in the field. I talked to different architects and engineers and all of them said the same thing. Alfred graduates were ready to go when they get put into any project and everyone was satisfied with their work.”

John Snyder (Buffalo, NY) has raised his knowledge and experiences at Alfred State as he builds towards a career as an architect. Along his journey he has taken various paths to fly towards success.

John loves being able to see his friends and make new friends in his major. “We bounce ideas off another and see what other people are doing. I enjoy being able to see how different people look at a problem and find a solution. We are all growing together to find one solution for a problem in the end.”

Being able to work with real life clients or in real life settings has been key to his learning. “Over the course of my studies I have worked with a company doing K-12 architecture work and one doing higher education and behavioral heath work. I have also been able to take part in two different design-build competitions. Both of those take the construction knowledge that I have learned here and put it into real world settings.”

The professors have added to his experiences. “The professors at Alfred State are great. I know anytime I have questions or concerns I can always go to them asking for help or guidance. They are always there ready to give me an answer and they push me to do my best work.”

John has learned how to fly drones through his participation in the Center for Architecture and Remote Sensing (CARS). “One of our professors is big into drones and photography and I started to kind of work with him. It has helped with architecture as it gives you a different look at things and areas that you would not normally see.”

On top of his studies, internships, participation in clubs like CARS, John and his friends branch out of their major by competing in intramurals. “The best part of Alfred State is the people and the community. Through intramurals and other events, you really grow together.”
