“I found a club sport team in my area in high school and fell in love with the entire sport. When I came to Alfred, I met another friend interested in fencing and we started a new club together. It has grown ever since."

Amanda Brady has been able to follow her passion in and outside the classroom at Alfred State.

Amanda was drawn to Alfred State from her home in the suburbs of New Jersey by the FEPAC accreditation of the forensic science technology program. She also has added a biological sciences degree.

“I was looking for a FEPAC accredited school and that left me with three options withing an eight-hour radius. Alfred State had the best instrumentation and the most hands-on experiences. Alfred State also starts with forensic classes in your first year.”

Her education led to an internship opportunity that is leading her to start her career with the same company. “I interned at a flavor chemistry company which allowed me to rotate into the flavor lab, the applications lab, as well as an analytical lab.”

Supporting her through her academic path have been her professors. “All of the professors in my major are extremely helpful. They always have office hours so you can talk to them about class material if you are confused or anything else.”

Outside the classroom, Amanda has been made Alfred State home. She has been part of Alfred Voices, worked as a tutor in the match lab and is a peer tutor, and co-founded the fencing club.

“I found a club sport team in my area in high school and fell in love with the entire sport. When I came to Alfred, I met another friend interested in fencing and we started a new club together. It has grown ever since. We are up to eighteen members, and we have been able to purchase electric equipment.”

Alfred was a different environment from where Amanda grew up. “It was an adjustment, but I was able to easily adapt once I spent some time with friends. Faculty and staff assisted me along the way.”
