The brackets for next weekend's NJCAA wrestling National Championships have been released. Mike Gustafson (Warren, PA), Darren Whittall (Starpoint), and Dan Dwyer (Lafayette) will represent Alfred State at the 50th championship event in Rochester, MN.
Gustafson earned his way to the National Championship by finishing 2nd at the Region III/Northeast District in the 133 lb. weight class. At regionals, defeated Nick Marouski (Springfield Tech) 9-3 in the semifinals and then fell to Dan Audy (Niagara CCC) 7-1 in the finals.
Gustafson enters the national tournament with a 12-9 record and will take on Craig Chiles from Meramac CC (St. Louis, MO) in a first round match-up on Friday, February 27. The winner will move on to take on Billy Murphy from Iowa Central CC.
Whittall enters the national tournament with a 7-15 mark and earned a wild card berth to the nationals following a 3rd place finish at Regionals at 141 lbs. Whittall is paired up with Ricky Moore from Spartansburg Methodist) in the first round with the winner moving on to take on Jemato Harris from Colby CC (Colby, KS) in the next round.
Dwyer will compete in the 197 lb. weight class after finishing the regular season with a 9-14 mark. He earned a place at nationals with a wild card after finishing 2-1 at the Regionals. In the first round of regionals he will take on Greg Arndt from Ridgewater CC (Wilmar, MN). The winner moves on to take on the winner of the Dan Hopkins (Middlesex CC) and Parker Brand (Rochester CTC).
