Alfred State College's Office of Career Development will host a "WINS" (Women in Non-traditional Studies) FutureBound Career Day, Friday, March 28, from 8:30 a.m.-2:15 p.m.
This annual career exploration day is held for 10th grade girls interested in learning more about non-traditional occupations and careers (non-traditional occupations are defined as those with fewer than 25 percent female workers).
Alfred State College's Office of Career Development will host a "WINS" (Women in Non-traditional Studies)FutureBound Career Day, Friday, March 28, from 8:30 a.m.-2:15 p.m.
This annual career exploration day is held for 10th grade girls interested in learning more about non-traditional occupations and careers (non-traditional occupations are defined as those with fewer than 25 percent female workers).
Scores of girls from area high schools, including Alfred-Almond, Arkport, Belfast, Canisteo-Greenwood, Fillmore, Friendship, Scio, Wellsville, and Whitesville are expected to attend and participate in a variety of workshop sessions in technology, math, and science.
Some of this year's offerings include Design with Unigraphics, (Steve Martinelli, ASC associate professor, Computerized Design and Manufacturing, and ASC Drafting/CAD-model building and process piping drawing student Kristin Rockwell, Sandy Hook, CT) will talk about Unigraphics, a Drafting/CAD software program utilized in industry; Bridge Building, (Cari Durbin, DOT engineer) allows students to use a simple set of plans to put a bridge together; Concrete Ingredients and Properties, (Erin Vitale, ASC assistant professor, Civil Engineering Technology) where participants make their own "sundae" with cement, water, and aggregates; Toothpick Architecture, (Joy Carlson, ASC professor, Computer Imaging and Architectural Engineering Technology) where students will build a structure with toothpicks and a glue gun; Fingerprinting Techniques, (Melinda Rounds, ASC university police officer), where students will learn the proper techniques of fingerprinting; Culinary Creations, (Deb Burch, ASC assistant professor, Culinary Arts Department) a creativity-generating workshop involving food; Circuit Boarding, (ASC computer and electronic systems technician students Katie DeRigge, Elmira, and Josh Feltz, Schroon Lake) where students will explore the technical world of digital electronics; Name That Animal, (Victoria Bolton SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor and chair, ASC Agriculture and Horticulture Department), where participants will become acquainted with a wide variety of live animals; Touchscreen Xylophone and Tic-Tac-Toe, (Glenn Brubaker ASC assistant professor, Electrical/Electronic Service Department), where students will have fun playing music and games with a touchscreen display; and Ready, Get Set, Build! (Catherine Kinnicutt, Dresser-Rand), where teams of students will simulate a manufacturing process.
Participants will be able to visit various career "stations" to get an insider's view of this technologically exciting array of careers.
Lunch will be provided on-campus for participants at 12:25 p.m.
This year students will be treated to keynote speaker Wayne Bensley, ASC assistant professor, Physical and Life Sciences Department, who will speak on "Forensic Science: Myth vs. Reality."

WINS seeks to educate women in non-traditional career training and employment opportunities. WINS was established to encourage women to enter traditionally male-dominated fields with high employment and salary potential.
