Team Effort Lifts Lady Pioneers over JCC

The Alfred State women's basketball team clinched the #2 seed in the Region III Division II Tournament with a total team victory, 62-56 over Jamestown CC.  The Lady Pioneers are now winners of eight straight and are 18-8 overall (7-3 RIII DII).

The Alfred State women's basketball team clinched the #2 seed in the Region III Division II Tournament with a total team victory, 62-56 over Jamestown CC.  The Lady Pioneers are now winners of eight straight and are 18-8 overall (7-3 RIII DII).

The Lady Pioneers led 29-19 at half and led by as many as 14 in the 2nd half but the Jayhawks rallied and cut the lead to three numerous times but could never get any closer.  Alfred's poor shooting from the foul line (15 for 28) kept JCC in the contest.

Five Lady Pioneers scored at least nine points.  Haley Witchella (Oxford Academy) led the blue & gold with 12 points and 16 rebounds while Camille Romero (Queens Village/Mary Louis) had 12.  Amie Brooks (Pavilion) chipped in 11, Nuri Bey (Bronx/HS of Computers & Technology) came off the bench and had 10 points and 18 rebounds, and Carriola Chambers (Manhattan/Facing History) chipped in nine.

Alicia Stebbins had 11 points and nine rebounds to lead the Lady Jayhawks.  Ashley Depane finished with 10, Nikole Lindquist had eight points and 11 rebounds, and Kristin Biela chipped in seven points and 10 boards.

The Pioneers shot just 29.4% from the field and 52.5% from the foul line but held a 63 to 55 advantage on the boards (23 to 19 on the offensive glass.  JCC shot 29.7% from the field and 55% from the line.

Alfred State has over a week off before heading to the Regional tournament next Saturday.  The #2 seed Lady Pioneers will take on #3 in the semifinals at tournament host Mercyhurst North East.  MNE will play the winner of the Genesee CC/Erie CC first round contest in the other semifinal.
