Six students enrolled in the Alfred State College construction management engineering technology bachelor-level program recently took second place in the Commercial Building Division at the Associated Schools of Construction Region 1 (Virginia to Maine) estimating and scheduling competition, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Fairfield, NJ. In addition to the special recognition the students and program received attesting to their success, the students each received a copy of Win Estimator software for their use.
This competition, a 20-year-old tradition for construction schools, simulates real-world conditions in a compressed time frame. The commercial building competition project was the Danbury, CT, police station and parking garage. The students participating in the Commercial Building division included Matt Bragg, Canandaigua; Jon Flannery, Byron; Andrew Hovey, Sandy Creek; Dean Lemmon, Waterloo; Brendan Lougheed, Byron; and Joshua Westbrook, Owego, who took the second-place honors against teams from Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, MA; Rochester Institute of Technology; Pennsylvania College of Technology, Williamsport; Pratt; Central Connecticut State; SUNY ESF; NY Poly Tech; Rogers Williams University; and the University of Maine, Orono.
Students arrive on a Thursday night and set up their “office,” consisting of laptops, color and black and white printers, a scanner, and a computer projector. Software used included Timberline estimating, Primavera scheduling, excel, and Power Point.
At 8 a.m. Friday, the students were given plans and specifications for their respective projects. The teams emerged from their hotel room at midnight to turn in an estimate, project schedule, and a means and methods plan. On Saturday the students gave formal presentations to a panel of judges from KBE Building Corp., Farmington, CT, the company that constructed the project.
A second team of six construction management engineering technology students competed in the Heavy Highway competition. The project for the heavy highway competition, sponsored by Weeks Marine, Cranford, NJ, was a fender repair on a bridge pier in the Hudson River. The college's second team was comprised of senior baccalaureate construction management students Andrew Weiler, Falconer; Matt Guzik, Cheektowaga; Jeremy Freeman, Sandy Creek; Eric Gebel, Warsaw; Kevin Clark, Syracuse; and Robert Grabel, Brooklyn.
The students were accompanied by their coach and adviser, faculty member Jeffrey Marshall, associate professor and chair, Civil Engineering Technology Department at ASC.
Financial support to participate in the contest was received from a variety of corporate sponsors as well as private donations by alumni to the Construction 100 Club fund.
