Pioneers split with Kats

The Alfred State College baseball team split a WNYAC doubleheader at Erie CC on Sunday afternoon.  ECC won the opener 6-0 before ASC rebounded to win the nightcap 9-5.   The Pioneers are now 6-4 (5-3 WNYAC) this fall.

The Alfred State College baseball team split a WNYAC doubleheader at Erie CC on Sunday afternoon.  ECC won the opener 6-0 before ASC rebounded to win the nightcap 9-5.   The Pioneers are now 6-4 (5-3 WNYAC) this fall.

In the opener the Blue and Gold scratched out seven hits but were unable to score.  Derek Speaker (Starpoint) and Bruno Saraceno (Binghamton) each finished with two hits. 

Erie plated one in the 1st, one in the 4th, and broke the game open wiht four in the 5th inning.

In the nightcap, ASC collected 14 hits and snapped a three-game slide.  The Pioneers built a 9-0 lead with one run in the 1st, two in the 3rd and 4th, three in the 5th, and one in the 6th before the Kats got the offense going and made the game close with a run in the 6th and four in the 7th.

Kevin Underhill (Somers) was 4 for 4 with 2 RBI to pace the offense.  Speaker and Jeff Miller (N. Tonawanda) each finished 2 for 3 with an RBI while Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) was 2 for 5 with an RBI.

Sam Wood (Campbell Savona) tossed a complete game to earn the win.  He allowed three earned runs and eight hits to pick up his second win of the fall season.

The Pioneers close out WNYAC fall regular season play next weekend with a pair of home doubleheaders.  They host Jamestown CC at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Genesee CC at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
