The Alfred State College men's track & field team remains in first place after day two of the NJCAA Division III National Championships. The men, 78 points, lead Harper College by 10 points heading into the final day of competition. The Lady Pioneers have earned 23 points good for seventh place in the standings.
Alfred State's Shawna McNeil (Hornell) and Schuyler Duross (Johnstown) won national championships in the multi events.
- McNeil scored 3,549 points, 137 points ahead of second place Chantal Salamone (Herkimer CCC), in winning the national title in the heptathlon. In the second day of competition she won both the javelin throw (24.04 m) and the 800 m (2:43.49).
- Duross earned a 224 point victory in the decathlon. His point total of 5,476 earned him the title. In the second day of competition he won the pole vault (3.70 m) and the 110 m hurdles (17.62). He also finished second in the 1500 m (5:02.47).
Rod Streater (Burlington, NJ) became the fifth Pioneer to win a national championship this weekend with a victory in the high jump. His jump of 1.95 m made him the third consecutive Pioneer to win the event at the national championship.
Wenley Louis (Irondequoit) earned another All-American honor in the triple jump. His leap of 14.17 m earned him second place.
Heather Sears (Letchworth) finished 3rd in the pole vault (2.42 m), David Gross (Brockport) finished 5th in the discus (41.49 m), and Peter Francia (Greece Olympia) finished 5th in the 3,000 m steeplechase (10:26.00),
Shawna McNeil advanced to the finals in the 100 m hurdles with the third best time in the preliminaries(17.28).
Another NJCAA Division III Championship meet record was broken in the discus as Brent Titus (Erie CC) crushed the previous record of 48.98 m with a toss of 55.69 m.
The final day of competition begins at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to continue to 4 p.m. when team awards will be given out.
