The Alfred State baseball team fell in both halves of their WNYAC season opening doubleheader vs. Mercyhurst North East. The Saints earned 10-5 and 15-3 wins to improve to 4-0, 2-0 WNYAC on the season.

The Alfred State baseball team fell in both halves of their WNYAC season opening doubleheader vs. Mercyhurst North East.  The Saints earned 10-5 and 15-3 wins to improve to 4-0, 2-0 WNYAC on the season.


In the opener, Mercyhurst broke a 5-5 tie with five runs in the 7th inning.  The Saints sent ten batters to the plate and collected five hits (three extra base hits) and two walks to take control of the game.


The Pioneers had tied the game up in the bottom of the 6th on a RBI walk to Jordan Wheaton (Wayland Cohocton), Steven Stapleton (Williamsville/Sweet Home) drove home a run with a RBI fielder’s choice, and Eric Hicks (Livonia) tied it with a RBI single.


Daiki Iizuka (Chiba, Japan) was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 4.  Alfred drew ten walks but stranded ten runners.


Stephen Solomon (Harrisburg, PA/Bishop McDevitt) pitched the first four innings and allowed one earned run on two hits while walking two and striking out three.


Mercyhurst used a six-run 2nd inning to take full control of the nightcap.  The Saints collected 17 hits (seven extra base hits) in the contest.


Alfred scored all three of their runs in the 3rd.  Anthony Gonzalez (Florida/SS Seward Institute) hit a RBI triple, Anthony Garcia (Long Beach) had a RBI groundout, and Mike Lallier (Sauquoit) had a RBI single.


Gonzalez was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits finishing 2 for 2 with a double and a triple.


The Pioneers have over a week off before hosting a WNYAC weekend Sept. 8 and 9.  The Pioneers play Niagara CCC on Saturday (9/8) and Erie CC at Sunday (9/9).  Both doubleheaders are slated for 1 p.m. starts.
