The Pioneers end the season with a 19-11 record while the Cougars (13-15) advance to the semifinals to take on #1 Erie CC on Saturday afternoon at Jamestown CC.
The Pioneers last led the contest 15-14 with just over eight minutes left in the first half. They trailed by seven at half, 27-20, and by as many as 14 in the second half. The Blue and Gold didn't go down without a fight as they clawed back into the game in the final minutes.
Trailing 56-47 with 2:04 remaining, Dan Foley (Irondequoit) connected on a three-point play and then made a huge block that led to a Fran Lantigua (Jamestown) lay-up. After GCC hit one of two foul shots, Pat White (Warren, OH) connected on a lay-up to make it 57-54. Genesee missed the front end of a one-and-one to give the Pioneers a chance to tie the game. A-State's three-point attempt rattled out and the Cougars grabbed the rebound. Panyon Makur hit two foul shots to seal the victory.
Makur led the Cougars with 16 points while Richard Westbrook had a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Boris Calhoun chipped in 12 points while Reid Houston scored 11 points and brought down 10 boards.
Lantigua led the Pioneers with 11 points while Travis Brannen (Elmira Free) chipped in 10 points. Dusty Marshall (Newfield) finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and six assists while Jerome Hall (Cicero North Syracuse) and Foley each finished with eight points each.
ASC was 22 for 62 from the field, 8 for 25 (32%) from three, and 2 for 3 from the foul line while GCC shot 24 for 53 (45.3%) from the field, 6 for 20 (30%) from three, and was 5 for 10 from the line. ASC held a slight 38 to 35 advantage on the boards.
The game was the second between the two in less than a week. Last Thursday at the Orvis Activities Center, the Pioneers downed GCC 98-95 in overtime in a fast-paced game.
The sophomore class of Marshall, Lantigua, and Hall finish their two-year career at Alfred State with a 35-24 overall record and two straight trips to the Regional Tournament.
