Lady Pioneers Win Regional Title

The #1 ranked Alfred State College women's cross country team defended their home course as they raced to the top spot at the Region III Championships.  The Lady Pioneers scored 45 as they raced the 5k course full of deep mud and slick hills.

Alfred State finished ahead of SUNY Delhi's 55, Mohawk Valley CC's 67 and Onondaga CC's 107.  Broome CC was 5th (114), Hudson Valley CC was 6th (129), and Herkimer CCC was 7th (175).  Athletes from North Country CC, Finger Lakes CC, and Columbia Greene CC also competed.

Tara Murphy (Rochester/Wilson) led the Lady Pioneers with a 3rd place finish.  She finished in 22:47.95 behind just Savannah Boucher (MVCC - 21:21.56) and Stephanie Peck (MVCC - 22:21.89).  Diana Burley (Warsaw) was 4th in 23:21.75), Emily Geesaman (Addison) was 7th (23:52.69), Kim Lupo (Auburn) was 10th (24:20.46), and Claire Holleran (Penfield) was 21st (25:34.23).

The regional title was the first since 2003 for the Lady Pioneers.  In 2003, ASC went on to win the NJCAA Division III title after claiming the regional title.

The Pioneer men were incomplete in the competition that was won by Mohawk Valley CC.  MVCC scored a 62 to edge Broome CC by two.  SUNY Delhi was 3rd (73), Hudson Valley CC was 4th (130), Finger Lakes CC was 5th (131), Onondaga CC was 6th (138), and Herkimer CCC and North Country CC was tied for 7th (173).

Jordan Friedman (Clarkstown South) led the Pioneers with a 21st place finish.  He finished the 8k course in 32:54.79.  Tom Lattanzi (Kings Park) was 36th (34:11.33) and Thomas Anderson (Sodus) was 44th (35:02.58).

Chris Burnett of Delhi won the men's title with a run of 29:37.15.

The Pioneers will now focus on the NJCAA Division III National Championships which will be held next Saturday in Westfield, MA
