Lady Pioneers Drop Wild Contest

The Alfred State College women's basketball team opened up Region III Division II play with a wild contest that was back and forth and needed five extra minutes to determine a winner.  After 45 minutes, Erie CC escaped the Orvis Activities Center with a 68-66 win over the Lady Pioneers.

The Alfred State College women's basketball team opened up Region III Division II play with a wild contest that was back and forth and needed five extra minutes to determine a winner.  After 45 minutes, Erie CC escaped the Orvis Activities Center with a 68-66 win over the Lady Pioneers.

Erie CC led 32-29 at halftime but the Pioneers put together a strong run and led 49-39 with just over nine minutes left in the contest.  The Lady Kats responded right back and went on a 12-2 run to tie the game at 51-51.  The teams traded leads in the final minutes but ECC led 56-54 with less than three seconds left with Camille Romero (Queens Village/Mary Louis) nailed two foul shots to tie the game and send into overtime.

ASC held the largest lead in OT but the Kats took the lead for good in the final minute when Bianca Dennis made a lay-up and coverted on the three-point play with the foul shot to give the Kats a 68-66 lead with under 30 seconds remaining.  ASC had two possessions but turned the ball over both times without getting a shot.

Nuri Bey (Bronx/HS of Computers and Technology) came off the bench and led ASC with 16 points and 11 boards.  Romero finished with 13 points while Amie Brooks (Pavilion) and Carriola Chambers (Manhattan/Facing Histoy) each had 10. 

Jasmine Ball led ECC with 16 points while Dennis finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Mercedezes Ephraim chipped in 11.

ASC shot 35.2% from the fieldand just 2 for 11 from three-point land.  The also struggled at the line shooting just 14 for 33.  ECC shot 32.9% from the field and was 19 for 36 from the line.  Both teams struggled with turnovers with Erie finishing with 35 and Alfred with 34.  ECC held a slight 58 to 55 advantage on the boards.

The Lady Pioneers head out of Region III Division II play on Tuesday when they visit DI Monroe CC.  Tip-off in Rochester is slated for 6 p.m.
