Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) and Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) led the Alfred State College women's basketball team to a 70-57 victory over Corning CC on Thursday night in the Lady Pioneers home opener.  A-State evens up their record at 1-1 on the young season while Corning is now 2-2.

Tiffany McLaughlin (Wellsville) and Anthia Smith (Elmira Free) led the Alfred State College women's basketball team to a 70-57 victory over Corning CC on Thursday night in the Lady Pioneers home opener.  A-State evens up their record at 1-1 on the young season while Corning is now 2-2.

McLaughlin scored a game-high 28 points (22 in the 2nd half on 10 for 13 shooting) while Smith added 19 points (16 in the 1st half) and six boards.  Sarah Flint (Westmoreland) finished with eight points while Sherelle Brooks (Elmira Free) finished with six points, 11 rebounds, and three assists.  Kristin Abbott (Webster Thomas) grabbed a game high 12 boards as the Lady Pioneers held a 48 to 22 advantage on the boards.

Philecia Spallone led Corning with 19 points while Becky Dittler came off the bench and chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.  Megan Leary had eight points, Kristen Kisel had seven, and Kim Owings chipped in six.

ASC led 36 to 20 at half but Corning cut into the lead a little in the 2nd half holding a 37 to 34 advantage.  The Lady Pioneers shot 47.5% (29 for 61) from the field and 55% (11 for 20) from the foul line while the Lady Barons shot 43.8% (21 for 48) from the field, 22.2% (4 for 18) from three, and 57.9% (11 for 19) from the foul line.

The Blue and Gold return to action on Sunday when they host Lakeland (OH) CC in a 1 p.m. contest at the Orvis Activities Center.
