Alfred State College head volleyball coach Gene Doorley has been awarded another honor following the best season in school history since 1977. Alfred State College head volleyball coach Gene Doorley has been awarded another honor following the best season in school history since 1977. After being named NJCAA Region III Division III Coach of the Year in late October, Doorley has been named the Northeast Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Doorley led the Lady Pioneers to a 32-3 record (30-2 in Region III Division III play) and a #5 ranking in the NJCAA Division III poll. The Blue and Gold won their first 22 matches of the season and brought home team titles at the Corning CC, Mohawk Valley CC, Jefferson CC, and Alfred State Tournaments. ASC was the Region III Division III tournament runner-up after entering the postseason as the #1 seed.
Three of Doorley's players Brianne McMahon, Jessica Bonczar, and Yurika Toyodome were named All-Region III and All-WNYAC. McMahon was also honored by being named the volleyball programs first NJCAA All-American.
Doorley is currently 70-49 (.588 winning percentage) in his four years as head coach of the volleyball program. He has led ASC to three straight trips to the Region III Division III Tournament after the program had not made the regional tournament since the early 1990s.
Doorley was one of eight recipients of the coach of the year awards. Each honoree from different parts of the country represented their region in the 2006 Tachikara/AVCA National Coach of the Year ballot.
Doorley was the only NJCAA Division III coach to be honored this season. Coach of the Year awards will be officially presented on December 14 at the AVCA's annual convention in Omaha, Nebraska.
