The 2009 Alfred State College cross country team is not only climbing up the NJCAA Division III poll but members of the team are making a difference with a trio of community service events.

To start the season the Pioneers participated in a team relay run that took them from Newark to Alfred.  Members of the team asked for donations from friends, family, and members of the Alfred State community to be donated to the American Cancer Society.  In total, the team raised $600.  This is the second time in the last three years that the team has done the cancer run raising funds for ACS.

Days later the cross country program hosted a high school scrimmage.  Each entry in the friendly scrimmage brought some sort of food donation that was given to the Alfred Food Pantry.  The program has made a donation each of the past five years.

Lastly, the team spent an afternoon trying to beautify a flower bed heading into the town of Alfred.  Team members pulled weeds and made the area look nice.

Currently Coach Gary Moore's teams are both in the NJCAA Division III top ten.  The men are ranked 3rd and the women are 5th.
