Baseball Wraps Up Florida Trip

The Alfred State College baseball team wrapped up their annual trip to Cocoa Expo in Cocoa, FL by winning one of their final four games.  ASC fell 7-5 to the Ontario Prospects, lost 4-0 to Riverland (MN) CC, defeated Massasoit (MA) CC 8-3, and dropped a close one 7-5 to Brookdale (NJ) CC.

The Alfred State College baseball team wrapped up their annual trip to Cocoa Expo in Cocoa, FL by winning one of their final four games.  ASC fell 7-5 to the Ontario Prospects, lost 4-0 to Riverland (MN) CC, defeated Massasoit (MA) CC 8-3, and dropped a close one 7-5 to Brookdale (NJ) CC.

Andy Grayson (Mechanicville) tossed six solid innings versus the Ontario Prospects.  He allowed seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five and walking four.  Jake Dale (Keshequa) was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and two runs scored while Steve Smith (Hornell) was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

Versus Riverland, the Pioneers were held to just three hits.  Joe Wallace (Avoca) pitched well but got no offensive support.  He allowed seven hits in six innings while striking out four and walking five.

Alfred State scored five 1st inning runs to take control in the victory over Massasoit.  Berto Vargas (Norman Thomas) was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Derek Speaker (Starpoint) was 1 for 4 with an inside-the-park homerun, and Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) registered a two-run double.  Mark Ciccotti (Horseheads) earned the victory in relief.  He tossed 3.2 innings of shutout ball allowing two hits while striking out three.

In the Florida trip finale, the blue and gold fell behind but rallied and had chances to tie the game or take the lead late in the game but was unable to capitalize.  Karl Kofmel (Ottawa, ONT) was 2 for 3 with two RBI, O'Brien was 2 for 3 with two runs, and Speaker was 2 for 4.  Brian Ervay (Elmira Southside) chipped in a clutch two-RBI single.

The Pioneers return back north with a 4-7 mark and will take the field again next Saturday when they travel to Scranton, PA for a doubleheader versus Lackawanna College.  ASC continues their weekend trip with a Sunday double-dip at Hagerstown (MD) CC.
