Baseball splits with Finger Lakes

The Alfred State College baseball team split their final regular season doubleheader at Finger Lakes CC on Tuesday.  FLCC got a walk-off homer by Zach Eason in game one to win 8-7 but the Pioneers collected 17 hits in the nightcap in a 15-1 victory.

The Alfred State College baseball team split their final regular season doubleheader at Finger Lakes CC on Tuesday.  FLCC got a walk-off homer by Zach Eason in game one to win 8-7 but the Pioneers collected 17 hits in the nightcap in a 15-1 victory.

The opener was a back and forth contest.  ASC jumped out to a 1-0 lead before FLCC answered back with four runs keyed by Eason's two-run homer in bottom of the first.  The Pioneers scored the next six runs but the Lakers rallied for three in the fifth inning to tie the game before Eason led off the bottom of the seventh with his second homer of the game.

Kevin Underhill (Somers) was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI, Kelvin Espinosa (George Washington) was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI and two runs scored, and Bruno Saraceno (Binghamton) was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI to pace the offense.

The Pioneers used a 10-run fifth inning to take full control of the nightcap.  ASC had six players finish with multiple hits in the contest and 17 total hits.

Saraceno was 3 for 3, Adalberto Vargas (Norman Thomas) was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored, and Espinosa was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI including a two-run homer.  Underhill was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI while Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) and Yordis Veras (Newtown) were each 2 for 4.

Jeff Miller (N. Tonawanda) pitched four solid innings to earn the victory on the mound.  He allowed one run on three hits while striking out four and walking just one.

The Pioneers finish the regular season with a 23-13-1 record.  They now shift their focus to the Region III Division II Tournament which begins on Friday at Mercyhurst North East.  A-State is the #2 seed and will take on #3 Mercyhurst North East at Noon on Friday.
