Baseball Earns #3 Seed for Regionals

The Alfred State College baseball team will be the #3 seed in this weekend's Region III Division II Tournament.  The Pioneers will enter the double-elimination tournament to be played at Monroe CC with a 26-15 overall mark and a 7-5 record in RIII DII games.

The Pioneers will battle #2 seed Monroe CC at 4 p.m. on Friday in their first round match-up.  The Tribunes enter the tournament with a 21-16 record and a 7-5 RIII DII record.  In their regular season four-game series, ASC and MCC each swept doubleheaders on their home field.  The Pioneers won 3-2 and 10-5 at Alfred State, while the Tribunes earned 16-3 and 12-2 wins at Monroe.

The blue and gold's offense enters the postseason with a .313 batting average (58 doubles, 22 triples, 12 homers).  Adalberto Vargas (Norman Thomas) led the Pioneers with a .417 average.  He has collected 11 doubles, three triples, six homers, and 49 RBI.  Jake Dale (Keshequa) is hitting .385 with seven doubles, four triples, two homers, and 33 RBI, Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) is hitting .375 with 10 doubles, three triples, a homer, and 27 RBI, and Karl Kofmel (Ottawa, ONT) has a .333 batting average.

On the mound, the pitching staff has a 4.51 ERA on the year in 253.1 innings of work.  Kyle Binder (Hornell) and Joe Wallace (Avoca) are both 5-2 on the season.  Binder has a 3.00 ERA in 45 innings of work while Wallace has a 4.11 ERA in 46 innings.  Andrew Foster (Mississauga, ONT) led the team with 55 strikeouts in 47.2 innings of work.  He has a record of 4-4 on the year.

The Pioneers-Tribunes contest will follow the #1 Genesee CC - #4 Mercyhurst North East contest to be played at Noon.
