Barbara, who was a member of the first executive secretarial science graduating class, credits her parents with wanting her, their only child, to have an education beyond high school.  Thanks to the education she received at Alfred State College, Becker went on to enjoy a decades-long career at Corning, Inc., until her retirement in 1987.  The bench and garden, components of a college-wide campus beautification initiative, require a commitment of $2,500 to procure the bench, a plaque, and the perennial upkeep of the small garden surrounding the bench.  Becker noted that the flowers brought to mind her parents who loved gardens and gardening and she sees this dedication as an eternal tribute to her mother and father.  She also expressed hope that countless other students and parents would avail themselves of the sanctuary the lovely spot provides.  Dr. John M. Anderson, president, Alfred State College, who presided over the ceremony and unveiled the memorial plaque, noted that Barbara was not only a friend of the college, but a special friend to all who know her.
