Alfred State College's University Police Department was recently awarded a grant in response to an application through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Commercial Equipment Direct Assistance Program (CEDAP). The University Police Department was selected to receive two HazMaster G3 Decision Support Systems, ultra-rugged handheld devices that integrate 118,000+ agents and incorporate chemical, biological, radiological agents, trade names, explosives, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) with extensive threat identification capabilities to make it an easy-to-use-decision support system. The HazMaster G3 software is the only CBRNE (Chemical/Biological/Radiological/Nuclear)/IED decision support system to have earned United States Department of Homeland Security certification and designation as approved anti-terror technology. On March 20, 2008, the ASC University Police hosted a training session with participants from the University Police, AE Crandall Hook and Ladder Fire Department, and facilitated by Alluviam - makers of the HazMaster G3 system. Participating were University Police Chief Gregory Sammons, Lieutenant Matt Heller, AE Crandall Hook and Ladder President Dr. Robert Pipal, and AE Crandall Fire Chief Rich Hoffman. At the conclusion of the training, University Police presented the Fire Department with one of the HazMaster G3 Decision Support Systems for use by AE Crandall and the Village. The two handheld systems also allow for the respective Emergency Response Plans of the Village and the Alfred State College campus to be loaded into the devices for portable recall and use in the event of an incident. The training and resource sharing represents the positive relationship between the Village of Alfred and Alfred State College.
