Michelle GreenMichelle Green, MPS, RHIA, FAHIMA
(NY), CMA (AAMA), CPC,  PCS, SUNY (State University of New York)
Distinguished Teaching Professor, Physical and Life Sciences Department, Alfred
State College, was named among the Top 10 in HIM (health information
management), as published in the Advance for Health Information
Professionals
newsmagazine.

Green's attraction
to the field began when she was 16 and sent away for a book called 200
Careers in the Health Field
. The only one that did not require patient
contact was medical record science, and Green's mind was made up--she'd head to
Alfred State College (it had dorms, and she wanted to live away from home) to
study HIM.

After graduation,
Green worked as HIM director in a couple of hospitals, then, in 1984, Alfred
State inquired to see if she would be interested in teaching at her alma
mater
. She accepted, and now Green is part of a successful HIT program. In
five of the last eight years, the program has had a 100 percent pass rate for
the registered health information technician (RHIT) exam.

A few years ago,
the program went from traditional to online, and Green easily made the
transition, with one caveat. She admitted that she missed being in front of her
students. "I have to admit that I am a bit of an actor, I guess,"
Green said. "I'm kind of a ham."

Other than that,
though, online teaching was a natural switch. Green, who has written several
books for Delmar Cengage Learning, knew she could not bring her far-flung
students on campus for a formal RHIT review course. Instead, she brought the
review to them, designing RHIT ExamPrep, a program that her students could
access online.

"Every time
they click on a practice exam in one of the domains, they get a new set of
questions," Green explained.

Green, a member of
the Alfred State College faculty since 1984, teaches courses online in health
information technology and coding and reimbursement specialist and serves as
academic adviser.

She attained the
ranks of assistant, associate, and full professor in 1988, 1993, and 1999,
respectively.  In 2004, she was honored with the SUNY Distinguished
Professor designation.

In 2008, Green
received the 2008 FORE Triumph Educator Award from the American Health
Information Management Association (AHIMA), which honors those who demonstrate
excellence in preparing the next generation of professionals for their HIM
(health information management) careers.

In 2000, Green was honored with the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in
Teaching, receiving a cast bronze medallion, suitable to be worn at academic
ceremonies, and an inscribed certificate.

Green is the
co-author of Understanding Health Insurance: A Guide to Billing and
Reimbursement
with JoAnn C. Rowell, Essentials of Health Information Management
with Mary Jo Bowie, and author of 3-2-1 Code It!

Green was selected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America for 1997; she was
also named to Who's Who among America's Teachers, 1994 and 2000.

Green holds a
master of professional studies degree from Alfred University, a bachelor of
science degree from Daemen College, Buffalo, and an associate's degree in
applied science from Alfred State College.  She serves on the Commission
of Certification for the American York Health Information Management
Association.

A graduate of
Elmira Free Academy, Green resides in Belmont with her husband Michael and son
Eric.
