School of Applied Technology to Host 12th Annual NYS Postsecondary SkillsUSA Competition

Alfred State College’s School of Applied Technology, Wellsville, will host the 12th annual New York State Postsecondary (college level) SkillsUSA competition Saturday, March 27, 2010. Proposed categories of competition are automotive service, CNC milling, carpentry, collision repair technology, commercial baking, computer maintenance technology, culinary, masonry, precision machining, residential wiring, technical drafting, and welding. CRT Sponsors Competition to Raise Funds for Haiti

In its continuing effort to aid the people of Haiti, another Alfred State campus group, the Campus Round Table (CRT), the central governing board for all Residence Halls on campus, sponsored a campus-wide penny wars competition. CRT members sat in front of The Terrace during the lunch rush and raised a total of $230.63. Read Article

Health Information Technology NYHIMA Awards

An Alfred State College health information technology graduate is being honored with achievement awards in 2010. Cheryl Wilkins, Wilson, has been awarded the New York Health Information Management Association (NYHIMA) Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Wilkins, who graduated from Alfred State in December 2009, maintained a 3.26 grade point average (out of a possible 4.0). Read Article

ASC Receives National Recognition for Community Service, Named to President’s Honor Roll

Alfred State College has been named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. Read Article

Damrath Named Distinguished Jurist by Center for Dispute Settlement

Joseph Damrath, attorney, Hornell City judge, and associate professor at Alfred State College, has been named a Distinguished Jurist by the Center for Dispute Settlement. He was honored at a luncheon in February. Damrath, who was among 10 candidates nominated for the award, selected by a panel of judges from the Seventh Judicial District (which includes Steuben County), was cited for using peaceful conflict resolution in his courtroom for the past 15 years, which helps in alleviating court-case backlogs. Alfred State College’s Communications Office has captured a bronze medal in the Higher Education Marketing (formerly Admissions Marketing Report) Report’s 25th annual national competition for its total recruitment package, which includes the ASC Viewbook, Applied Technology Viewbook, Road Piece, Campus Life, Financial Aid, and Athletics pieces. ASC President Commits to ‘Climate Neutral’ Campus

Dr. John M. Anderson, president, Alfred State College, has joined a growing list of higher education leaders committed to fighting global warming. Earlier this week, Anderson agreed to sharply reducing and eventually eliminating all of the college’s global warming emissions, and accelerating the research and educational efforts to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate.
