Alfred State Named to U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges for 4th Consecutive Year

Alfred State College’s reputation continues to grow as proven by its ranking this year in U.S. News and World Report’s 2011 Best Colleges report. Alfred State College is ranked 27th among the top regional colleges in the North, ranked 8th among the top public schools (regional colleges in the North), and was included in the rankings of those colleges with the highest average freshman retention rate, coming in at 66.5 percent. No Additional Applications Will Be Considered for Fall 2010

The College anticipates its largest enrollment in decades with many programs already on waiting lists. The growth is attributed to the fact that Alfred State College is an excellent value with quality programs and graduates enjoy a placement and transfer rate of 99 percent. According to College President Dr. John M. Anderson, the College made this decision because of the on-going reduction of State support as well as the failure of the New York State Legislature to pass the Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act (PHEEIA). Pesticides and Pollinators Symposium at ASC

Alfred State College recently hosted a Pesticides and Pollinators symposium. Maryann Frazier, extension entomologist from Penn State, conducted a morning session that examined the role played by pesticides in the decline of North American pollinators, particularly honey bees. Read Article

Appalachian Regional Commission Federal Co-chair Visits ASC

Alfred State College hosted Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), the New York Department of State (NYSDOS), and Southern Tier West Regional Development and Planning Board (STW) representatives on Wednesday, July 28, at the School of Applied Technology campus in Wellsville. ASC Requests Funding for Renewable Energy Technical Training Center

An appropriation of $500,000 was granted this week to Alfred State College pursuant to a request for funding to support a renewable energy technical training center. Now that the bill has been approved by the Senate Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee and the full Senate Appropriations Committee, it will move forward to the Senate and Conference with the House and then to the President for signature. Nine Tracksters with ASC Ties Heading to Empire State Games

Nine athletes with ties to the Alfred State College track and field teams will compete this week at the Empire State Games.  The 2010 Summer Games will be held in Buffalo with most of the track events taking place at the University of Buffalo. Read Article

White Signs with Youngstown State

Alfred State College football player Pat White (Warren, OH) has signed his national letter of intent to continue his career at Youngstown State.  White joins the Penguins and will compete in the Gateway Football Conference, a NCAA Division I football bowl subdivision program. Read Article

Pollinators and Pesticides Symposium, July 22, 2010

A steady decline in pollinator species has been noted for decades. Additionally, the increasing loss of honey bee colonies suffered by the commercial beekeepers that provide pollination services to commercial growers indicates that many food supplies are imperiled. A symposium on pollinators and pesticides will introduce attendees to some of the recent findings related to honey bee and pollinator losses. Read Article
