Financial Aid Calendar
September
Create your Federal Student Aid Account. Dependent students need an account for both the student and one parent. Keep your account info secure.
Use the Federal Student Aid Estimator to receive an early estimate of your Student Aid Index (SAI) and eligibility.
NYS residents: Learn more about the NYS TAP Grant and use the TAP Award Estimator to receive an early estimate of your eligibility.
October
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using Alfred State’s FAFSA code

Apply for the NYS State TAP Grant via the FAFSA confirmation page or directly on the HESC website.

6005 (Bachelor’s). - Non-citizens: apply for NYS aid via the Dream Act.
- Mixed-status families can use the Alternate Eligibility Path without filing a FAFSA.

About 5 business days after filing the FAFSA, you’ll receive an email link to your Student Aid Report (SAR). Review it carefully for accuracy.
Apply for additional NYS scholarships and sign up for Excelsior Scholarship updates to receive an alert when the application opens.
December
FAFSA review begins!
January
New students with a valid FAFSA will receive a Financial Aid Offer in the mail, along with an email on how to view the offer on the my.AlfredState.edu student portal.
Returning students will receive a postcard and an email when their Financial Aid Offer is available for viewing online.
February - March
Begin searching for outside scholarship opportunities through your high school, community organizations, and online.
April
Follow the required steps to process your financial aid.
Students selected for Federal Verification must provide tax returns or income information to our Office. Please respond promptly.
May
Enrollment Deposit due May 1! Secures a spot in your major and any Alfred State scholarships. (Some majors have earlier deadlines.)
NYS Residents: Watch for Excelsior Scholarship updates and apply when the application opens.
June
Your Financial Aid Offer may change due to Federal Verification, enrollment/housing changes, or new scholarships. Be sure to check your campus email regularly for updates.
Let us know about any outside scholarships or grants that you’ll be receiving.
If your family has experienced income changes or hardship, contact the office. Financial Aid adjustments may be available through a Professional Judgement Request.
July
Watch for the fall billing notice in your Alfred State email.
If your financial aid is not showing as a credit on your bill, check the Finances page in the my.AlfredState.edu student portal for unsatisfied requirements.
Complete Direct Loan Entrance Counseling and the Master Promissory Note (MPN) at StudentAid.gov.
Explore on-campus jobs posted on JobLink through the Career Development Office.
August
The Fall semester bill is due. Pay by the deadline to avoid late fees or dropped classes.
Classes begin! Stay in good academic standing—low grades can affect financial aid eligibility.
September - October
Refunds will be issued to eligible students once bills are satisfied.
November
Spring billing notices are mailed and sent to your Alfred State email — pay attention to the due date to avoid late fees and dropped classes.
Monthly Payment Plans
What is the Monthly Payment Plan?
Alfred State offers a Monthly Payment Plan (MPP) option through Nelnet to enable families to spread educational expenses for the semester into equal monthly payments and avoid additional borrowing. Please note that Monthly Payment Plans are not available for non-matriculated students.
Enroll early each semester to take full advantage. You can enroll online when you process your bill at my.AlfredState.edu/finances. Veteran Monthly Payment Plan is not available online. More information can be found here.
