Pioneer PROfiles - Emma DeJonge

student looks on in a class
Through her studies of business administration, Emma feels prepared to have a career anywhere in the world.

“I chose Alfred State because most of my family has gone here before, so I wanted to keep that in the family. I also like the small-town feel. I felt like my interactions with the professors and in the classroom would be very personalized."

Emma chose business administration because several of her family members own their own businesses. “In high school I really liked math, and I like being around people. My main drive for wanting to go into this field was that I got to combine the math and people aspect.”

Emma enjoys how the classes are set up. “Classes have lectures of course, but we have in-class coursework that we do. I also have class discussions, we do real world problem solving, and we also do papers and presentations.”

Building relationships with her professors has enhanced Emma’s experience at Alfred State. “The professors here have been wonderful. If I have questions, they are always there to help.”

Those relationships help Emma take her studies across the world. She was able to gain work experience through an internship program that had her working at the reception desk at the Hotel Admiral in Sorrento, Italy. During the summer, she was able to put her knowledge into action.

“We marketed and advertised for many of our events like fun dining experiences and special live music. I was able to create surveys for guests to see how we were doing and what we could improve. I also created flyers that gave guests information on local attractions.”

“In the classroom, you learn about all these things,” continued Emma. “In an experience like this you can apply it to real-world situations. Doing this in a different country is even better because you really get to understand different perspectives. The trip was good for networking. I met so many people from around the world there and even got job offers.”

Emma is excited to see where her studies take her even if a job takes her overseas. “I do believe my time here at Alfred State has helped me in my future jobs.”
