Drawn to Alfred State's close-knit campus, small class sizes, and strong reputation, Peter Tonkery (Livonia) found the supportive learning environment he was looking for. Although he originally planned to study welding, he realized his passion was helping others and changed his major to Human Service Management before arriving on campus.

"I wanted a career where I could make an impact on people's lives, and Human Services gave me that opportunity."

Through discussion-based classes, hands-on activities, and counseling simulations, he has built the communication and interpersonal skills needed to work directly with clients. One of his most meaningful experiences came during a course where students practiced counseling techniques in one-on-one sessions. He was able to apply those skills during an internship in Wellsville serving individuals recovering from addiction.

"My internship was eye-opening. It helped me understand the kind of work I want to do and confirmed that this is the right career path for me."

He credits Alfred State's faculty for bringing real-world experience into the classroom and creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and seeking guidance. "The professors are always available and bring their own experiences into class, which helps connect what we're learning to the real world."

Outside the classroom, he helped establish Alfred State's Psychology Club and now serves as its Vice President. Working alongside faculty and fellow students, he has helped build the organization from the ground up while creating new opportunities for students to engage with mental health topics and serve the campus community.

Looking ahead, Peter plans to earn a master's degree and become a mental health counselor.
