Alfred State honors academic excellence at annual Honors Convocation

Alfred State students were honored at the 42nd annual Honors Convocation. Dr. Carrie Cokely, Vice President for Academic Affairs, presided over the event.

Cokely was thrilled to spend an afternoon celebrating student achievement. “This event spotlights the incredible things our students are doing both in and out of the classroom and is such a terrific way to kick off the final week of the school year. To the students returning, keep the momentum going, and to our graduates, go out there and do amazing things.”

Alfred State President Dr. Steven Mauro and Cokely offered welcome addresses prior to inviting the deans of each of the three schools to present the Dean’s Awards for Academic Excellence. Laura Murray (Diagnostic Medical Sonography) and Laura Mills (Agribusiness Management) were honored in the School of Arts and Sciences), Alaina Ogorzalek (Accounting) and Jessie Marusarz (Marketing) were honored from the School of Architecture, Management, and Engineering Technology, and Mason Fleischman (Electrical Construction and Maintenance Electrician) and Drew Perkins (Heavy Equipment Operations) were honored from the School of Applied Technology. 

Cokely returned to the stage to award the Vice President for Academic Affairs Award to Sebastian Zona (Building Trades: Building Construction) and Brianna Fagan (Architecture).

Vice President for Student and Employee Affairs Dr. Gregory Sammons honored Janiesha Dureny (Building Trades: Building Construction) and Jazz Jarbeck (Technical Communications) for their Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Read more about the Chancellor’s Award.

Dr. Sammons also honored Selena Fullone and Elijah Adams with the Patricia K. Fogarty Former College Chair, Endowed Award. 

  • Fullone, an Architecture major, has a long-standing dedication to community service. She helped establish a fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation, participated in numerous community cleanups, and has volunteered with the American Institute of Architects.
  • Adams, a Sport Management major, has spent four years volunteering with Habit for Humanity through the EOP Summer program. He has supported elderly residents through yard maintenance, home repainting, and community recovery. His leadership and service have strengthened the community and the students he mentors.

Chair of the College Council Ronald Nasca awarded a pair of Pioneers with the Leadership through Civic Engagement Award. Isaiah Dempson (Criminal Justice) and Tayler Taitt (Agribusiness Management) were honored for their work on civic engagement initiatives during their time at Alfred State.

Radley Ranin (Cyber Security) was honored as the recipient of the ReClaim Mega Sale Endowed Scholarship. The $650 award honored Ranin’s dedicated service to the Community Needs Hub.

Student Senate President Jalon Rainey presented Clinical Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Radiologic Technology Danielle Merring with the Student Advocate Award. Merring is credited by her nominators for her dedication to the students and the department. She not only prepares her students for licensure exams but prepares students for upcoming careers.

Court Reporting Professor Danielle Green was awarded the Excellence in Online Teaching Award. Her students shared that she goes above and beyond to make sure her students have all the resources available to them to success. She is known to be always available to answer questions, is a skilled and inspiring motivator, and a model of professionalism.

Students from each of the three schools received certificates for their academic achievements. Awards ranged from honor society induction, Department Outstanding Student Awards, and scholarship recipients. 

Alfred State will honor the Class of 2026 at Commencement on Saturday, May 9.
