Alfred State’s School of Arts & Sciences hosted an Adjunct Faculty Appreciation event that honored the contributions of five professors, Cherie Gibson, Katherine McNelis Flint, Philip Schierer, Katharine Stiffler, and Bill Swanson.
“It was special to take a few moments to thank these hard-working adjunct professors,” commented Director of ELITE Danyelle O’Brien. “We appreciate the passion, knowledge, and dedication to our students that all our adjuncts have.”

Gibson has taught in the Nursing department for thirteen years.
“Teaching for me has always been an aspiration of teaching the next generation of nurses. It has always amazed me to watch a shy young student who does not know what to say or do flourish into amazing nurses.”
Flint has taught in the Physical and Life Sciences department for fifteen years.
“I love the Alfred State community – the people I work with and the students are absolutely terrific. I feel both appreciated and respected. I love Chemistry and I am hopeful that I am making a difference in spreading some of that enthusiasm to students.”
Schierer has taught in the Mathematics and Physics department for eight years.
“What I like best about teaching at Alfred State: When a student finds joy and understanding in mathematics through our work together.”
Stiffler has taught in the English and Humanities department for twenty-four years.
“The mix of students at Alfred State is welcoming. I enjoy meeting students from outside the area as well as commuters. I also value the camaraderie within the department.”
Swanson has taught in the Social and Behavioral Sciences department for fifteen years.
“I have always enjoyed teaching at Alfred State because of my wonderful colleagues and the kindness and respect I have always felt from my students. It truly makes coming to campus an enjoyable experience and I feel fortunate to have such a wonderful situation at this point in my life.”
Kathleen Casey, Dean of the School of Arts added, “We are fortunate to have such dedicated part time faculty that provide exceptional education to our students. We just wanted to give them all an extra thank you.”
Each honoree was given a book, Campus Store gift card, and enjoyed cake and refreshments at an open house to honor them hosted at the Center for Innovation and Teaching Excellence (CITE).
