The Alfred State College swim team completed a very stong showing at the Northeast Districts on Sunday. The men's team finished as runner-ups and the women were 3rd out of 9 teams. At the conclusion of the meet, the women's team was named the most improved team while head coach Bob Haley was named the men's coach of the year.

Phil Valenta (Maine Endwell) won the 200 breast (2:30.06) while Alex Newell (Binghamton) was 2nd in the 200 back (2:05.10) and 2nd in the 1650 free (17:56.79). Dan Langworthy (Peekskill) earned a 2nd place finish in the 100 free (51.70). Sean Valvano (Newark) was 3rd in the 200 breast (2:38.85) while Paul Congdon (Bath) was 3rd in the 200 fly (2:21.85).
The men's 400 free relay team of Newell, Congdon, Langworthy, and Brett Kozlowski (N. Tonawanda) finished 2nd (3:23.90) to wrap up the competition.
Becca Mastasio (Livonia) was 3rd in the 200 breast (3:02.34) and 4th in the 1650 free (21:50.12) while Kaitlyn Corbett (Clarence) was 3rd in the 200 breast (2:24.87). The women's 400 free relay of Mastasio, Corbett, Jessica Chan (New Hyde Park), and Rachele Zanghi (Canandaigua) finished 3rd (4:31.73).
The men's team earned their 2nd straight runner-up finish by scoring 387 points in the three day competition while Monroe finished with 427. The women scored 208 points and trailed just Monroe's 578 points and Genesee CC's 331 points.
The Pioneers now shift their focus to the NJCAA National Championships. The championships begin March 5 in Indian River, FL.
