Janiesha Dureny (Sussex, NJ) discovered Alfred State while searching for a technical college that would allow her to learn through doing. Originally accepted into Construction Management, she quickly realized that the Building Construction program at the Wellsville campus was a better fit for her hands-on approach to learning.

"When I walked into this building, I knew this was where I wanted to be."
Since arriving at Alfred State, Janiesha has spent countless hours turning classroom concepts into real-world skills. Students combine lectures and hands-on labs which include working on residential homes, community projects, and campus construction initiatives. From framing and roofing to cabinetry and finishing work, she has gained experience across nearly every aspect of the building process.
"My favorite part is going to the house and seeing something built from the ground up. In just two years, we've watched a project go from nothing to a complete structure."
The program's faculty has created a supportive environment where students can learn both professionally and personally. "The professors are very understanding and approachable. I've built relationships with them that go beyond the classroom, and that's something I really value."
Looking ahead, Janiesha hopes to use her skills to support projects such as Habitat for Humanity and eventually build a home of her own.
Outside of her studies, Janiesha stays heavily involved on campus as a member of the track and field team, Student Senate, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). She believes those experiences have helped her grow professionally while connecting with students from across Alfred State.
"Getting involved has been one of the best parts of my experience. There are so many opportunities here, and they've helped shape who I am both inside and outside the classroom."
Alfred State has helped Janiesha frame and build a career that she is excited about.
