After the COVID pandemic, Stacy Alcott (Pavilion, NY) wanted to make a meaningful career change and find a profession that allowed her to help others without becoming a nurse. She found Alfred State’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, with small class sizes, a supportive learning environment, and accelerated path to a new career.

"I wanted to make a difference in people's lives, and sonography gave me the opportunity to do that."

The program combines classroom instruction, hands-on labs, and extensive clinical experiences. Before entering the field, Stacy and her fellow students develop their scanning skills by practicing in the lab before progressing to hospitals and medical offices, where they gradually assume more responsibility.

"Our clinical experiences build your confidence step by step. By the time you graduate, you're ready to do the job."

One of Stacy's proudest moments came during a clinical rotation when she had to step up. "That experience showed me I really could do this. It gave me the confidence to know I was ready for my career."

She credits the faculty for creating a welcoming environment and preparing students with the latest techniques and technology. "They understand what we're going through because they're still doing it. They're always willing to help and make sure we succeed."

As a non-traditional student balancing family responsibility, Stacy appreciates the flexibility and support she received from faculty while returning to college.

Before graduation, she accepted a position with the organization where she completed her clinical rotation, and her employer specifically cited Alfred State's comprehensive clinical training as one of the reasons she was hired.
