Professionals from local municipalities and Allegany County recently gathered at Alfred State College (ASC) to complete a non-credit microcredential focused on heavy equipment brakes, strengthening critical maintenance and safety skills used in the field.

The training brought together equipment operators and mechanics for a hands-on learning experience designed to reinforce foundational brake systems knowledge while building practical expertise. Participants engaged in skill-building activities and had the opportunity to practice equipment operation using Alfred State’s simulators. In addition to technical training, the program created space for collaboration and connection, allowing attendees to network with others from across the region.

The program was made possible through grant funding from Empire State Development, which continues to support workforce development initiatives that expand access to training and upskilling opportunities.

“We are incredibly grateful to the municipalities and Allegany County partners who invested in their teams by sending employees to participate in this training,” said Danyelle O’Brien, Director of the Office of Extended Learning, Innovation, and Teaching Excellence (ELITE) at Alfred State College. “These partnerships are essential to our mission. Alfred State remains committed to being a strong regional partner, helping organizations upskill their workforce with relevant, hands-on learning experiences that meet real industry needs.”

A special thanks is extended to Allegany County Assistant General Supervisor, Cash Davidson and the Town of Alfred Superintendent, Bob Halsey and Equipment Operator, James O’Brien for their work bringing everyone together.

This microcredential is part of a broader portfolio of workforce training programs at Alfred State aimed at supporting industry partners and strengthening the regional economy through applied education.
