ASC Spotlight
Seeing is Believing as Alfred State continues Enrollment Growth
The incoming class at Alfred State College (ASC) reached 1,493 full-time new students on the census date, the largest group since 2010, for a total enrollment of 3,758. This milestone continues an upward trend for ASC despite a regional decline in high school graduates. Leaders credit the success to immersive campus visits that let prospective students experience hands-on learning, close faculty connections, and a strong career focus.
“At Alfred State, we pride ourselves on delivering a high-quality education grounded in applied learning across every program,” said Vice President for Enrollment Management Kishan Zuber. “In today’s world, career readiness makes all the difference - and it’s one of the biggest reasons students choose us. I’ve challenged my team to ensure every campus visit leaves a lasting impression. We’ve reimagined the experience to emphasize meaningful, face-to-face connections with faculty and staff, along with opportunities to engage directly with current Pioneers.”
Hands-on open houses, high school mini visits, admitted student days, and events like Veterinary, Agriculture, Sciences, and Technology (VAST) Career Discovery Days have drawn thousands of visitors to campus. Families tour classrooms and labs, sample dining, meet professors, and see residence hall options. For many, the mix of interactive activities and conversations with industry-experienced faculty sets Alfred State apart.
“We try to show our visitors what it really is like to be a student at Alfred State,” commented Associate Vice President of Integrated Enrollment Services Kandi Geibel. “Our enrollment team, in partnership with faculty and offices across campus, provides added opportunities to interact with professors and experience labs in action. They get to feel the community of support that will propel them through college and onto a rewarding career.”
Across the enrollment process, Alfred State is seeing gains at every stage. Campus visits and attendance at open houses, admitted student days, and orientation are all up more than 10 percent over the past year. Each step in this admissions cycle reflects growing intent to enroll, driving this fall’s increase.
Alfred State’s admissions and marketing teams are also expanding outreach into new markets and multiple states. As a result, out-of-state applications have grown 41 percent in the past two years, and the total number of applications from all states for fall 2025 is a record-breaking 11,500. Looking ahead, interest remains strong, with applications for fall 2026 already 23 percent higher than at this time last year.
Research shows that applicants who visit campus are far more likely to enroll, and more than 64 percent of this year’s incoming class visited before the semester began, underscoring that seeing the Alfred and Wellsville campuses in action is often the deciding factor. High school juniors and seniors will have two upcoming chances to experience it for themselves at open house programs on October 18 and November 9.
College leaders note that Alfred State’s 99 percent job placement and continuing education rate, nationally ranked programs, and affordable tuition make it a top choice for families seeking both value and results. Open house events provide a glimpse of what college life is all about, and enrollment momentum shows that students and parents like what they see.

Cameron Hernandez | Construction Supervision
Cameron first came to Alfred State to pursue a degree in electrical construction, but after completing his associates continued his education by pursing a degree in construction supervision.
“I really like the construction supervision degree program that I'm in because we go through all aspects of construction project. We learn about the materials themselves, strengths, weaknesses, methods for using them and we also learn how to plan out projects.”
Cameron has also done estimating, supervising and has taken safety courses.
While working on his electrical degree, his professors encouraged him to learn the business side of the field. “My classes are a lot of lab work. During labs we use Revit to draw building plans and models. We make construction schedules of when work gets done, by which trades, and the progress of the building.”
Cameron has also taken classes like accounting that have helped him understand the financial parts of construction.
Hands-on projects like making 3D models of an actual courthouse have added to his knowledge. “We had to replicate their 2D drawings and make 3D models out of them. Getting these physical projects and being hands-on with them helps prepare us for what we're going to do in the field.”
Cameron appreciates the real-world experience his professors bring to the classroom. “The professors give us points on what they have experienced and how they see things done in the field.”
On top of his studies, Cameron has kept himself busy on campus. He is a student manager at ACES, a tutor, a resident assistant, a student ambassador for University Police, and proudly wears the Big Blue suit.
“Being so involved on campus, I have had people come up to me and just talk to me about my experience and ask questions about everything I do. I have helped forge the community at Alfred State. You have a sense of belonging here.”
Alfred State has wired Cameron to construct his own future.

Alfred State expands Truck and Diesel Program for this Fall
Alfred State College (ASC) celebrated the groundbreaking for an expansion of its popular Heavy Equipment, Truck & Diesel Technician program. The expansion includes the construction of an additional 10,000 square feet for labs, equipment, and classrooms, and increased capacity to enroll more students.

“The engine is running; our team is ready to go,” commented Alfred State President Dr. Steven Mauro. “Our faculty and staff are going to take this great investment and move the truck forward, expanding our Truck and Diesel program, and continuing to meet workforce needs through the education of students in this important area of need in New York and beyond.
During his comments, Mauro thanked those who fueled this idea to become a reality. He credited Development Fund Board Member and 1987 graduate, Connie Caputo, for getting things started, Wellsville resident Jody Miller and his family in Wellsville for being the spark plug, and former CEO and President of Linder Industrial Machinery, John Coughlin, ‘78, for adding to the support. The project was further accelerated by funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), the Empire State Development Fund (ESD), and the Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc.
“The quality of the kids coming out of here, the work ethic, they are just hardworking people,” commented Coughlin. “We have been so blessed to have acquired many kids (graduates) who have done a fantastic job for the company. It really is a ‘give a little and get back a whole lot’ from this group. It has been very rewarding.
The 10,000 square foot expansion includes space to add a second full classroom, installation of a new overhead crane for heavy lifting in the lab and will allow students to use a drive-on dynamometer machine (DYNO) to simulate drivability problems. ASC offers an associate degree and microcredentials related to Truck & Diesel.
The expansion has an impact immediately as Alfred State is adding twenty more students in Fall 2025 along with more faculty and staff. Overall, 125 more trained heavy equipment and construction technicians will graduate per year, boosting workforce development and responding to increased employer demands in the construction, building trades, agriculture, and clean energy sectors.
Truck and Diesel instructor Daniel Acomb knows the students will benefit from the added space and equipment. “It is going to really help the students. When they show up to work after they graduate, they are going to be able to go right to work. They are going to be able to take their tools, and the boss is not going to have to watch them stand around not knowing what to do. They are just going to find something broken, and they are going to go fix it.”
Miller added, “It is incredibly important from an economic development perspective for this town. When we’re giving, we should be giving where it can be multiplied many times. It is just a small gift to assist, really kickstarting a larger educational initiative.”
Labor projections for this region show a demand for over 20,000 more workers in Construction Equipment Mechanics and Heavy Equipment Operation by the end of the decade.
Mauro concluded, “This is one of many examples of how people and groups have supported Alfred State. In turn, we are able to make use of this great support to provide educational excellence to students.”
