Five Pioneers Named to All-WNYAC Baseball Team

Five members of the Alfred State College fall baseball team have been named All-WNYAC following the Pioneers 10-6 season.  Kevin Underhill (Somers) was a 1st team selection, Jeff Benchich (Millbrook), Adalberto Vargas (Norman Thomas), and Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) was named to the 2nd team, and Jeff Paul (Horseheads) was named honorable mention.

Kevin UnderhillJeff BenchichJeff PaulFive members of the Alfred State College fall baseball team have been named All-WNYAC following the Pioneers 10-6 season.  Kevin Underhill (Somers) was a 1st team selection, Jeff Benchich (Millbrook), Adalberto Vargas (Norman Thomas), and Kenny O'Brien (Norwalk, CT) was named to the 2nd team, and Jeff Paul (Horseheads) was named honorable mention.

Underhill led the Pioneers with a .396 batting average (.419 in WNYAC play).  He collected a double, a triple, and a team high 12 RBI.  He also scored eight runs, walked 12 times, and committed just two errors in 77 chances playing a variety of positions.

Benchich was 2-1 with a 2.21 ERA in 20.1 innings of work this fall.  He made four appearances and three starts this fall.  He struck out 11 while walking 10.

Vargas finished the fall with a .319 batting average (.286 in WNYAC play).  He had three doubles, a triple, and a team high two home runs.  He drove in 11 and scored 10 runs.  In the field Vargas played 3rd base and left field.

O'Brien hit .340 this fall (.364 in WNYAC play) with two doubles and 10 RBI.  He scored 13 runs and stole four bases.  He started all 16 games in centerfield and committed just one error.

Paul played in 15 games this fall primarily as the Pioneers designated hitter and finished the campaign with a .343 batting average (.400 in WNYAC play).  He scored seven runs and collected a double, a home run, and 8 RBI.

The Pioneers earned the #3 seed in the WNYAC Tournament and fell in the semifinals.  The team will be back on the field in the middle of March when they open up their spring season with their annual trip to Cocoa Expo in Cocoa, FL.
