Alfred State College 1978 graduate Walter Sass was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by the State University of New York. Sass is a respected leader in his field, a first-generation college graduate, and a generous community advocate.
Sass has maintained a deep and lasting connection with his alma mater throughout a distinguished career in civil engineering and surveying.
After earning his associate degree in surveying, he relocated to Texas, where he began working at Weisser Engineering. By 1987, he had acquired the company and led it through significant growth from just three employees to over 125 while navigating industry shifts, technological advancements, and economic challenges. Now retired from day-to-day leadership, he has passed the business to his children, having built a legacy rooted in hard work, innovation, and community service.
Sass’s contributions to Alfred State are extensive, including nearly $120,000 in donations of cutting-edge surveying equipment, laboratory upgrades, and student workstations. His support extends beyond financial giving - he mentors students, facilitates career opportunities, and frequently returns to campus to inspire future surveyors.
His impact reaches well beyond Alfred, as he and his company actively support nearly 40 nonprofit and educational organizations annually.
Sass received his honorary degree during the college’s 115th Commencement Ceremony.
