Pioneer PROfiles - Jessica Ficarra

Student looks through a design book
“I didn’t know where I was going to end up when I was younger. This has been such a great opportunity to expand my education and go further and make everyone proud.”

Jessica Ficarra has found connections in and out of the classroom at Alfred State. Drawn to creativity, she has loved the hands-on opportunities within the interior design program.

High school teachers guided recommended Alfred State to Jessica, “They told me that it was a nice small school, small classes, great area, just kind of a secluded little college town, and I thought it would be a nice getaway that wasn't too far from home.”

Jessica enjoys the mix of lecture and lab-based classes. “We learn about things through lecture that can help in lab and then lab is more of a hands-on creatively. Alfred State does a good job at both the technical side of things that are going to be helpful in a firm later, but also the creativity side where you can be yourself and express yourself.”

Real world projects have added to her learning. “We're currently redesigning the library. I always felt like the library could be a good space to work (with) and it could use a little bit more space planning to make it more effective for more people.”

Getting help and support from her professors has been key. “The professors are super approachable. I have had my advisor and my professors help me when I needed it. I’ve reached out to them and made appointments to get extra help with things that I was not super clear on, and they’ve helped me along my journey here.”

Jessica looks forward to being the first in her family to cross the stage at Commencement. “I didn’t know where I was going to end up when I was younger. This has been such a great opportunity to expand my education and go further and make everyone proud.”

Jessica has found more of her community outside by joining the Alpha Beta Chi and the Women in Architecture & Design (WIAD).

“Alpha Beta Chi was a great decision. To have friends and connections from all over and to help me grow as a person on campus. WIAD helps us grow in the field with older and younger students working together sharing connections and creativity.”

Alfred State has given Jessica the tools to design a future that she’s excited for.
