Research with Real Results

Hands-on discovery. Industry-aligned projects.

Real outcomes for students, employers, and New York State.

At SUNY - Alfred State College, research is not limited to theory or journal-driven scholarship. It also shows up in the daily work our faculty and students do as they design, build, test, and refine solutions across more than 200 labs, shops, studios, farms, clinics, and job sites. That kind of work has always been part of our identity, and it remains one of the most compelling reasons students and industry partners choose ASC.

Research with Real Results brings this activity into full view. It highlights the applied discovery, creativity, and problem-solving that shape academic life here and that directly benefit the region we serve. Donors and partners can see why their support matters: it leads to better tools, stronger communities, and graduates who know how to solve real problems from day one.

The Four Pillars of Research with Real Results:

1. Experienced Faculty

ASC faculty know the industries they teach. They help students tackle practical challenges, analyze real constraints, and carry ideas through to working prototypes or finished results. Their guidance gives students a clear sense of how professional problem-solving actually works.

2. Industry Partnerships

Employers and advisory boards work closely with ASC, often bringing real problems to the table. Those collaborations ensure that faculty and student projects reflect current workforce needs and community priorities, and they often lead to solutions that local partners can use.

3. Student Innovation

Our students move quickly from concept to action. They sketch, test, build, evaluate, and try again. Their work ranges from early prototypes to community-focused projects, and that hands-on approach runs through their entire academic path rather than waiting until senior year.

4. ROI for Real Outcomes & Impact

ASC focuses on applied discovery that has value beyond the campus. Some projects support workforce needs, others address local challenges, and many receive grant funding that helps the region grow. Each example shows partners that their investment creates visible, meaningful results.

Spotlight on Innovation

“Research with Real Results shows what happens when talented faculty, motivated students, and engaged industry partners come together to create solutions that matter. At Alfred State, real results build stronger communities, better careers, and a more resilient New York.”  — Carrie Cokely, VP Academic Affairs

Alfred State is ranked number one for undergraduate teaching among all northern regional colleges by US News, reinforcing the power of our hands-on approach and faculty/industry collaborations. ASC will continue to spotlight projects that capture this spirit of Pioneer ingenuity and recognize the people whose work makes a difference.

Applied Research in Action

Smart Farming Robotics: NSF Grant

With nearly half a million dollars in National Science Foundation funding, a multiyear initiative established an integrated robotics and automation pathway for agriculture. Engineering and ag students are designing systems that help farm efficiency, growing both the regional economy and the skilled workforce needed to support it.

Lower-Carbon Cooling Technology Patent

A mechanical engineering technology student and professor patented a cooling process modeled on human sweating. When placed in a vacuum, heat transfers faster and reduces the need for hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants, opening the door to more climate-friendly air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions.

Rural Water Access Solutions

Students in civil engineering, construction management, surveying, and architecture partnered with the Allegany County Department of Health to design new ways to increase drinking-water capacity in rural communities. Their designs offer practical options that support public health and future economic development.

Farm-Powered Renewable Energy

Two Alfred State students won an “AHA Collegiate Competition” with a business plan for a biogas digester that turns manure into usable energy. The concept helps dairy farmers cut greenhouse gas emissions while adding a new revenue stream to protect farm viability.

Community Design for Small-Town Revitalization

Architecture students developed a set of design proposals for the Town of Friendship, NY, focused on beautification, economic opportunity, and new business activity. Through this applied research, students created a practical blueprint to support community renewal.

Pioneers are PROS!

Students come to Alfred State to work with real tools, real equipment, and real expectations. Employers know ASC graduates are ready to contribute from day one. Applied research at ASC is:
