Today, we pause to honor and remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We remember those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard United Airlines Flight 93, and we hold in our hearts the families and communities forever changed by that day.
We also pay tribute to the extraordinary bravery of the first responders, firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and countless others who ran toward danger with unwavering courage and compassion. Their selfless actions continue to inspire us and remind us of the strength found in resilience, unity, and service to others.
Today we honor Alfred State alum Richard Prunty, ’63, (Electrical Engineering). He was a Battalion Chief for the New York Fire Department Battalion 2 and made the ultimate sacrifice while rescuing people from the World Trade Center. A plaque in our Engineering Building honors him.
Twenty-five years later, the responsibility to remember remains as important as ever. For many of our students, September 11 is a moment in history that occurred before they were born. It is up to all of us to ensure the stories of those we lost, those who served, and those who sacrificed continue to be shared with future generations.
Flags on campus today will be lowered to half-staff and the Hinkle Belltower will toll 25 times at 8:46 a.m. We encourage all faculty, staff, and students to pause and participate in the national moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time that the first tower was struck.
On the Wellsville campus, students will gather near the main entrance (next to the old administration building) at 8:30 a.m. for a time of reflection and remembrance. The Emerald Hook & Ladder Company will display an American flag from their ladder truck.
The Cultural Life Center, Empire Service Corps, and ASC Veterans United will host a 9/11 Walk Challenge. The memorial event challenges members of our community to climb 110 stories (2,200 steps) to honor the firefighters, first responders, and all those who lost their lives. Meet at the Main Entrance between 9 AM and Noon and walk the campus loop to the 9/11 Information Table located in the Green Space outside the Student Leadership Center.
