Nehemiah Abelard-Johnson (Brooklyn, NY) enjoys learning and interacting with various parts of engineering in his mechatronics technology program at Alfred State.
“Alfred State is one of the few colleges that have a mechatronics program. I like that they teach you step by step through the engineering process and build up skills.”
Nehemiah enjoys taking what he learns in class and applying it in the lab setting. “We are in relatively small classrooms where we learn about the theory of engineering and then we get to apply these skills in a three-hour lab. We get trained on how to use various equipment that is useful for when you get a job.”
He has been drawn to learn about 3D printing. “3D printing is useful for real life. You can make equipment or prototype stuff whenever you're working on the job.”
Collaborating with students in different engineering majors has added to his experiences. “You get a feel of how it will be to work on a job where you would have to work with several types of engineers. You get to learn their skills and their point of view on how they would look at a problem instead of just having the only one mindset.”
The professors have added to his experience, “They are open and provide real-world experience. They talk about their experiences on the job and how it could apply when we may face these situations or how it applies to class.”
Nehemiah encourages others to pursue Mechatronics, “You should try it out because it allows you to learn skills that will sustain for a lifetime.”
He knows he is prepared for anything that life may throw at him.
