Ava Sylvester (Fillmore, NY) chose Alfred State's Agricultural Technology program because it offered the hands-on learning, affordability, and close-knit community she was looking for.
Growing up on her family's 300-goat dairy farm, raising crops, and operating a farmers market stand helped spark a lifelong passion for agriculture. "Agriculture has always been a part of my life, and Alfred State helped me discover exactly where I wanted to focus my future."
In the classroom and on the farm, Ava has gained experience working with livestock, conducting animal health checks, operating equipment, and applying agricultural concepts in real-world settings. She appreciates that many classes quickly move from lecture to hands-on learning opportunities.
"We'll start in the classroom, but a lot of the time the professors say, 'Let's go do it.' That's how I learn best."
Sylvester credits the faculty for helping her grow both academically and professionally. She says professors consistently create opportunities for students, provide career guidance, and make student success a priority.
"The professors really care about us. They want to see us succeed and help connect us with opportunities for the future."
Through her coursework, Sylvester discovered a passion for agronomy and plans to continue her education before pursuing a career in the field. She also values Alfred State's strong transfer relationships with institutions such as Cornell and Penn State.
Outside the classroom, Sylvester competes in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, participates in the Soil Judging Club, and works as a student employee preparing soil labs for fellow students.
A fourth-generation Alfred State student, Sylvester takes pride in continuing a family tradition while creating her own path.
Alfred State helped Ava put her hands in the soil and grow toward the career she wants.
