Seeing her younger sister’s ultrasound before she was born inspired Rebekah Kalladen (Brewster, NY) to explore Diagnostic Medical Sonography, which combines technology with patient care. Alfred State’s program offered a top-quality healthcare education at the affordability of a SUNY institution.
"I wanted the same quality education I could get at a private school, but at a price that made sense."
Rebekah and her classmates begin by mastering the fundamentals before practicing with ultrasound phantoms and progressing into clinical experiences where they work directly with patients under professional supervision.
"My favorite part is the hands-on experience. Once I started scanning and everything clicked, it gave me the confidence to keep improving."
Clinical rotations have allowed Rebekah to work alongside experienced sonographers that helped prepare her for specialties ranging from abdominal imaging to obstetric and demonstrate different scanning techniques.
She appreciates the current industry knowledge brought into the classroom by her instructors that focuses on the skills students will use every day in the profession. "The professors are still working in the field, so everything they're teaching us is current and relevant."
She hopes to return closer to home to work in a hospital or obstetrics practice, serving the community she calls home.
"The clinical experience has really prepared me for the field. It's given me the confidence and skills to help patients from day one."
A recipient of an Alfred State academic scholarship, Rebekah says the financial support helped offset the cost of textbooks and program materials, making her education even more affordable.
