Kirsten Merritt (Cortland, NY) was drawn to Alfred State because of its welcoming campus, close-knit community, and proximity to home. As a transfer student, she also found the right fit on the women's basketball team, making the transition an easy decision.
"When I was looking to transfer, I knew Alfred State was the right place because of the environment and the people."
Kirsten dreams of managing social media and digital content for a professional sports team. She was drawn to flexibility of the Technical Communication and Emergent Media major.
"I love that this major allows you to tailor your work to your interests. For me, that's sports."
One of her favorite classroom experiences was developing a technical editing portfolio, where she refined her writing, editing, and communication skills while reflecting on her growth throughout the semester.
Kirsten appreciates the program's small class sizes, which allow students to work closely with faculty and receive individualized feedback. "The professors are very personable and always willing to work with you. They push you to do your best while giving you valuable feedback."
As a member of the Alfred State women's basketball team she has built friendships, participated in community service, and developed leadership skills that extend beyond athletics.
"Being on the basketball team has helped me connect with so many people on campus. It's given me confidence both in the classroom and on the court."
Alfred State has Kirsten the confidence and experience to pursue the career she has always wanted.
