A reputation for hands-on learning and exposure to real-world automotive repair drew Rachel Maxim (Jefferson, NY) to Alfred State's Automotive Service Technician program.
After discovering her passion for automotive technology through a two-year BOCES program, she wanted to build on that foundation with experiences that reflected what technicians encounter every day.
"I like figuring out wiring diagrams and solving problems. Every vehicle is like a puzzle."
Throughout the program, Rachel has worked on a wide variety of customer vehicles, from older, rusted cars to the latest models equipped with advanced technology. She has gained experience rebuilding engines and transmissions, diagnosing electrical systems, and performing live customer repairs that mirror the pace and challenges of a professional repair shop.
"We work on all different makes and models, just like you would in an independent shop. That real-world experience is one of the best parts of the program."
Rachel credits the faculty for creating a supportive learning environment while emphasizing the importance of doing the job correctly. "The professors are very personable and always willing to help. They want to make sure you understand the work and are prepared for the field."
Her classroom experience quickly translated into career success. After connecting with representatives from the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) at an Alfred State career fair, she secured a winter internship that confirmed her career goals. She plans to return to the DOT after graduation.
"They asked me technical questions during my interview, and because of what I learned at Alfred State, I knew the answers."
Rachel is excited to continue her automotive career while staying current with emerging technologies, including electric vehicles.
