40th annual Sophomore Career Day held at Alfred State

President Mauro delivers a keynote address
Alfred State President Steven Mauro shares his career path to sophomores attending the 40th annual Career Day. Students had the chance to explore four career opportunities.

Nearly five hundred students from nine different school districts participated in the 40th annual Sophomore Career Day held at Alfred State. The event allows students to explore multiple career paths.

Alfred State President Steven Mauro delivered the keynote and shared his career path to his current position. He encouraged the students to keep an open mind and explore their interests.

Students then chose four career paths to explore. Presenters from various local businesses and organizations spoke on their professions to give students insight into their journey to their profession, what the profession entails, and answered any questions the students might have.

Students explored career opportunities including but not limited to arts and music, building trades, engineering, heavy equipment, law enforcement, psychology, and radiology.

Alfred State professor Jessica Hutchison (agriculture) and professor emeritus Mike Ronan (Automotive) presented while staff member Paul Welker (journalism and marketing) and recent graduate Elizabeth Reed, ’26, (veterinary science) were four of the twenty-seven different presenters.

"Career Exploration Day offers students the chance to connect with local professionals, learn about different industries, and gain insight into potential career opportunities," said Katie Carr, Rural Postsecondary Economic Development Pathways Coordinator. "We are proud to be part of an event that encourages students to think about their future and explore the many pathways available to them. The dedication of GST BOCES, the Career Development Council, and our community partners help make this experience impactful year after year."

After exploring four career paths, students returned to the Orvis Gymnasium for lunch and an opportunity to get their picture taken with Big Blue.

Students from Addison, Avoca, Bath Haverling, Bradford, Campbell-Savona, Hammondsport, Hornell, Jasper-Troupsburg, and Prattsburgh participated in the program.

The event was organized by the Career Development Council (CDC), GST BOCES, and the Alfred State RPED team at Alfred State.

The CDC works to prepare learners for the transition to employment by connecting the education and business sectors to deliver career development services that promote career awareness, exploration, and choices.
