Drawn to Alfred State's reputation for hands-on learning, Arnold Saint Phard (Alfred, NY) found the perfect balance between theory and application in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program.
Originally pursuing Engineering Science with plans to transfer into aerospace engineering, he ultimately discovered that Mechanical Engineering Technology offered broader opportunities and a career path that aligned with his interests.
"The lectures gave me the foundation to do the hands-on work, and when it came time to apply what I learned, the professors were always there to help. I've never felt lost."
As he progressed through the program, classroom concepts evolved into extensive lab experiences involving system design, instrumentation, troubleshooting, and optimization. One of his most rewarding experiences has been working on a multidisciplinary senior project to design a net-zero building alongside electrical engineering and architecture students.
"This project has shown me what it's really like to work with other professionals. We've had to collaborate, communicate, and solve problems together just like we will in the real world."
He credits Alfred State's faculty for playing a significant role in his success. Professors routinely draw upon their industry experience, provide career guidance, and make themselves accessible to students both inside and outside the classroom.
"The professors are knowledgeable, practical, and genuinely care about your future. They've helped me explore career opportunities, make connections, and prepare for life after graduation."
As a first-generation college student, earning a degree carries special meaning. He hopes to serve as an example for future generations of his family while continuing to build his career in automation and control systems.
"I'm proud to be a first-generation student. I want to show others what's possible through hard work and education."
Looking back on his experience, he believes Alfred State's combination of hands-on learning, faculty support, and real-world preparation has positioned him for success.
Alfred State helped Arnold take control of his career.
