Dear College Community,
At Alfred State, we are committed to fostering an inclusive community where every individual feels valued, heard, and empowered to make a meaningful impact both on our campus and in the world beyond.
Each year on June 19, we pause to honor Juneteenth, commemorating the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth stands as both a celebration of freedom and a powerful reminder of our nation’s ongoing journey toward equality and justice.
As we reflect on the significance of this day, let us honor the courage, perseverance, and resilience of those who came before us. May we also renew our commitment to creating a community, and a society, where opportunity, respect, and belonging are extended to all. Together, we can help build a more just, compassionate, and equitable future for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Steven Mauro, Ph.D.
President
