Martin Luther King Jr. Day - 2026

Students work on a service project downtown.
Alfred State students will gather today to work on a pair of service projects to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Dear Alfred State Community,

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us, “Not everybody can be famous, but everybody can be great, because greatness is determined by service.” These words underscore a powerful truth: each of us has the capacity to make a meaningful difference through our actions and our commitment to others. At Alfred State, we can live out this call to service every day.

Dr. King’s lifelong pursuit of equality and social justice was grounded in courage, vision, and compassion. We honor his legacy by embracing our core values of respect, integrity, service, and dedication. When we uphold these principles, we strengthen our community and contribute to lasting, positive change.

I encourage every member of our community, students, faculty, and staff, to seek opportunities to serve, whether on campus, in our local communities, or beyond. Through service, we not only honor Dr. King’s legacy but also help create a more just and compassionate world.

One such opportunity to serve is happening today (1/19) in the Student Leadership Center. Join members of our college community between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. as we put together Book-Blanket-Buddy kits for children and Personal Hygiene kits for adults and children.

As we begin the spring semester, I am inspired by the collective impact we can achieve together. Let us continue to foster a community where service, kindness, and justice guide our actions.

Sincerely,
Steve Mauro, Ph.D.
